The Friends of the Muskoka Lakes Public Libraries are holding a meeting on March 3 at 7:00 pm to discuss programming ideas for the upcoming summer season. All library lovers are encouraged and welcome to attend the meetings and give forth your ideas on how to enrich the Township of Muskoka Lakes libraries. Also, the Friends have some beautiful Muskoka Pewter pins and ornaments that are for sale at the Port Carling branch in support of the libraries in the township.
The public is also encouraged and welcome to come to all Muskoka Lakes Public Library Board meetings held monthly in Port Carling on the second Tuesday of each month at 3:00 pm.
From time to time, for a variety of reasons, libraries must de-select books from their collections,. Perhaps the book’s information is no longer valid or the condition of the book has deteriorated to the point where it is no longer inviting to borrow. Often the library has too many copies of a once popular title making the extras redundant. The staff of the Muskoka Lakes Public Library in Port Carling has been weeding, and continue to weed, the library shelves of books that meet the criteria stated above and invite all to come and take some bargains home. The price cannot be beat as they are for sale for only fifty cents each and the children’s books are an even greater deal at five for a dollar. It’s a great time to stock the grandparent cottage library!
There is nothing to compare cuddling up with a child and a book but if you are looking for an added way to enhance your child’s reading experience then check out the library’s website. On the electronics resources tab there is a wealth of databases that can be accessed 24 hours a day including three different Tumble Books sites:
TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of TumbleBooks – animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.
TumbleReadables is an online collection of read-along titles for elementary to high school students which features adjustable online text and complete audio narration. Sentences are highlighted as they are being read and the pages turn automatically. The collection features chapter books, early readers, YA/Teen Novels, high interest/low level books for both elementary and high school students, plus classics of American and English literature. Read-Alongs are great for emergent, struggling, and reluctant readers, as well as being an excellent tool for ESL. They are also well received by strong and accomplished readers who are excited to follow along to the narration of their favourite books. Children, who are now growing up with e-mail, instant messaging, IPODs, and text messaging are early and willing adopters to this innovative online reading experience.
TumbleTalkingBooks allows you to listen to your favourite audio books with just a click of a button. Listen online to audio books in many different categories: fiction, non-fiction, classics and even Spanish language audio books! These books are always available, never on hold, and no need to download. Browse. Click. Listen. It’s that easy!
